Speaker: HG Anand Vardhan Prabhu
Verse: SB 11.8.17
Chapter: The Story of Piṅgalā

Important Points from Translation & Purport

  • A saintly person living in the renounced order should never listen to songs or music that promote material enjoyment.
  • One should learn from the example of the deer, who becomes enchanted by the hunter’s sweet music and is captured and killed.

Important Points from Class

  • The deer teaches us not to be captivated by material sound.
  • Because the deer has large, sensitive ears, hunters attract it with sweet music and trap it.
  • The moth is attracted to fire and gets burned.
  • The fish is attracted by taste (tongue) and gets caught.
  • The bumblebee is attracted by fragrance (smell).
  • The elephant is attracted by touch and gets captured.
  • Animals are trapped by just one sense.
  • Human beings can be captivated by all five senses.
  • Therefore, we should redirect our hearing toward transcendental sound — the Vedas and the words of Krishna.
  • There are many bhajans and Vaiṣṇava songs that uplift consciousness.
  • The Hare Krishna maha-mantra can be sung in many ragas.
  • Scriptures like Bhagavad-gītā and Caitanya-caritāmṛta are composed in poetic and musical forms.
  • Reference: Caitanya Bhagavata, Madhya Chapters 9 and 10 (Mahāprakāśa Līlā).

Speaker: HG Rasananda Prabhu (Temple President, ISKCON Bhopal)
Verse: SB 11.8.16

Important Points from Class

  • A song was composed by Srila Prabhupada on 62nd birthday of Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura (SBSST) – his spiritual master.
  • The song name is – My Lord and Master His Divine Grace
  • Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura’s greatest contribution to us was giving us Srila Prabhupada.
  • Srila Prabhupada always said that whatever he achieved was only because of his spiritual master.
  • SP met his guru only 4–5 times but followed him strictly and seriously.
  • In Caitanya-caritāmṛta, many living entities are mentioned, but only through the mercy of the guru do we attain Krishna.
  • A disciple should accept the instructions of the guru as his life and soul.
  • Before leaving this world, SBSST instructed SP to preach Krishna consciousness in English.
  • SP said, “I am never separated from my Guru Maharaj.”
  • Many disciples of SP may have met him only once, yet they are doing great service.
  • SP said that if one chants 16 rounds and follows the four regulative principles, one can return back to Godhead.
  • SBSST was grave and serious from childhood, like Sage Narada.
  • Once, after eating a ripe mango without offering it to the Lord, he later refused to eat ripe mangoes as a principle.

Important Points from Class

  • In this world, people want happiness but do not know how to attain it.
  • We do not know how long we have been wandering in this material world.
  • Coming to Gaudiya Vaishnavism is not ordinary — it is the result of many lifetimes (bahūnāṁ janmanām ante).
  • Association with devotees and hearing Srimad Bhagavatam and Bhagavad-gītā is very rare and special.
  • Pingala was a prostitute for a long time but became disillusioned with material life.
  • Even if we obtain material enjoyment, there is no guarantee it will satisfy us permanently.
  • Sex life is compared to an itching sensation — temporary relief but deeper entanglement.

  • Living in the body is like changing clothes.
  • Real happiness exists beyond the body and mind.

  • The soul hankers for pure love and eternal happiness.
  • Preaching is the highest welfare activity.
  • Daily sadhana gradually transforms our consciousness.
  • We should ask ourselves: “Am I making incremental progress in spiritual life?”
  • Everything happens by Krishna’s arrangement for our ultimate good.

  • Association with devotees is essential for detachment and realization.

Speaker: HG Sri Bhagavat Seva Prabhu
Verse: SB 11.8.31

Important Points from Translation

  • The Lord is eternally situated within the heart.
  • He is the source of real love, happiness, and prosperity.
  • Ignoring Him and serving insignificant people brings fear, anxiety, lamentation, and illusion.

Important Points from Class

  • There are three types of lamentation:
    • Lamentation of a materialistic person.
    • Lamentation of a practicing devotee.
    • Lamentation of a pure devotee.
  • Lamentation can be conducive to spiritual progress.
  • When hankering is intense, intelligence works only to obtain the desired object.
  • Krishna fulfills our desires to show us that they cannot truly satisfy us.
  • A practicing devotee laments when unable to properly follow devotional principles.
  • Sometimes we question why Krishna has put us in a situation, but later we understand it was for our good.
  • Sense gratification and devotional service are directly opposed.
  • One should remain a sincere servant of the Lord and believe in His mercy.

  • Due to this offense, he developed a fault-finding mentality.
  • Isvara Puri rendered humble personal service to his guru by cleaning and serving him.
  • A first-class disciple anticipates the spiritual master’s desires without being instructed.
  • Lord Caitanya was initiated by Isvara Puri in Gaya.
  • The main instruction given was to chant the holy name: “Harer nama harer nama…”
  • Association with sincere devotees develops service mood.

  • Real tapasya is practicing devotional service in association with devotees.
  • One who cannot control the tongue cannot control the other senses.

  • Service must be performed for the satisfaction of guru and Krishna.

26th February 2026

  • Speaker: HG Gauranga Smaranam Prabhu
    Verse: SB 11.9.1-2
  • Chapter Name: Detachment from All that Is Material

Important Points from Class

1. Overcoming Material Desires and Competition

• When material desires arise in the mind, we become disturbed; when we give up material attachment, we become peaceful.
• Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakura would say, “Jade pratistha sukhera bista.”
• Once, a person was overtaken while driving a car. His wife said, “See, he has overtaken you.” The man then drove very fast and overtook the other car. But his wife said, “You are foolish because we had to turn left 20 km back.” Similarly, if we get absorbed in material competition, we will miss Krishna Consciousness.
• Srila Prabhupada received a letter saying, “I will set up a printing press to distribute more books.” Srila Prabhupada replied, “Do not compete — cooperate.”
We must ensure that our Krishna Consciousness is not disturbed.

2. Purity, Forgiveness, and Clarity of Goal

• Once, a brahmana cursed Chaitanya Mahaprabhu that He would not get material happiness — and Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was happy.
• Gopal Chapal tried to defame Srivas Pandit. He kept paraphernalia of demigod worship like non veg food at this house. Srivas Pandit saw paraphernalia such as non-vegetarian items placed there. He called everyone and said, “You think I am a great devotee, but I indulge in these activities.” Everyone knew he was pure. Gopal Chapal was afflicted with leprosy. Later, he sought forgiveness from Srivas Pandit, and his leprosy was cured.
Disturbance in the mind comes from a lack of a clear goal in life. If we are clear that we want to attain Krishna, everything becomes adjusted.
• When we give up the desire for name, fame, and money, we can practice devotion peacefully.

3. Freedom from Envy and protection from Maya

• A crow was unhappy that he was black. He went to a cuckoo; the cuckoo said the parrot was happier. The parrot said the peacock was happier. The peacock said, “I am caught and kept in a zoo, so how can I be happy.” Crow thought I am better because I have freedom.
We should learn to celebrate others’ success. If we feel happy seeing others’ happiness in Krishna Consciousness, we will also advance.
• We are happy when Krishna is happy.
• Intelligent people do not envy others. When we cause pain to others, we ultimately suffer ourselves.
• To protect ourselves from Maya, we must pay a cost. Let us understand with COST abbreviation.

COST:
C – Conviction: We must be firmly convinced to practice Krishna Consciousness.
O – Open to superiors: Take guidance from superiors. If we do not open up to them, Maya will influence us. With their help, we can grow in life.
S – Safeguard boundaries: Identify what disturbs us and create healthy boundaries to protect ourselves.
T – Taste: Develop a higher spiritual taste – para dvā nivartate.
