Memorable stay in Mayapur, the birthplace of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu

I always feel privileged to be in Mayapur and stay here. In this holy place Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, an incarnation of Krishna appeared around 500 years ago.

Mayapur is also the headquarter of Iskcon – International Society for Krishna Consciousness.

Glories of Mayapur dham is unlimited. If one just stays in Mayapur and following the instructions of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu practices devotional life then one will not just get freedom from all sufferings but will also get an opportunity to return to the spiritual world, the kingdom of God, Goloka Vrindavan.

So, whenever I get an opportunity, I come to Mayapur and stay there.

Visiting Mayapur to celebrate New Year

This year, me and my wife decided to spend 30th and 31st Dec in Mayapur because we thought that this is the best way to welcome 2018. It isn’t a new year according to Vaisnava calendar but nevertheless Srila Prabhupada taught us that every occasion can be celebrated in a Krishna Conscious way.

We decided to join a group of devotees who were going to Mayapur. We started from Kolkata at around 6:45 a.m.  Devotees were trvelling by bus. I do not like to travel by bus because I have motion sickness.  But it is always better to travel with the devotees, so I reluctantly agreed.

Praying to the Lord and after taking a stemetil tablet, I boarded the bus. But after some time, I was feeling sick but fortunately the bus stopped for breakfast and I quickly got down to breathe fresh air.  

Malpua story

For breakfast, everyone was served hot noodles. Devotees were enjoying it but because I was feeling uneasy, I could not relish it. Once during annual Kartik Yatra of Iskcon Chowpatty, devotees were served malpua.

Many devotees relished malpua and after finishing it they again stood in the queue for second helping of malpua. After finishing the second helping, they again went for third helping and so on.  As much as they could eat, they ate it and thoroughly enjoyed it.

But there were unlucky devotees too because they could not enjoy malpua. They had problem digesting malpua which is made using lots of ghee, milk and is soaked in sugar syrup. Some could not eat because of diabetes. Some wanted but could not enjoy it because their stomach was in bad mood that day.

In the evening class that day, HH Radhanath Swami Maharaj was jokingly explaining that it is all because of our karma. Some devotees with good karma may relish malpua and want more. But some because of their bad karma cannot digest even a small morsel of it although they like it.

I was thinking that because of my bad karma I am not able to enjoy the noodles.

Krishna Conscious fun activities

Anyway, after breakfast, we again boarded the bus. As a precautionary measure, I took another stemetil.

It was time for Krishna Conscious fun activity in the bus. We had planned for quiz and DUMB charade.

I had prepared few quiz questions. HG Anant Bhagavan Prabhu asked me to conduct the quiz. All the devotees who were travelling were newly introduced to Krishna Consciousness, but they knew answers to almost all the questions.

Although the questions were simple but everyone need to be complimented for their knowledge about the Vedic scriptures. Questions were about Krishna’s pastimes and were also from Mahabharata and Ramayana.

I have never played DUMB Charade, so HG Anant Bhagavan Prabhu organized it. Later HG Sri Nitai Prabhu sang a very melodious Hare Krishna kirtan which everyone enjoyed.

Reached Mayapur, the spiritual capital of world

During the journey I was constantly inquiring when are we going to reach Mayapur because of obvious reasons. And finally, we reached Mayapur at around 12:15 p.m.  By the time we collected our room keys and prasadam coupon it was almost 1 p.m. Unfortunately darshan was closed, so we decided to have lunch prasadam.

We took prasadam in Gada Bhavan. Taking prasadam in Gada Bhavan is always a unique experience because of its ambience. You will feel that you are eating in a Vedic monastery. Prasadam as usual was tasty.

Darshan and evening programs

After eating prasadam we took rest till 4 p.m. We had a class by HG Acharya Ratan Prabhu, co – director of ISKCON Kolkata at 4:30. But before the class, we all rushed to take darshan of Sri Sri Radha Madhav and Panca Tattva. We felt blessed to see the beautiful deities. We also took darshan of Lord Narasimhadeva and Srila Prabhupada.

After taking darshan of the deities, we went to attend the class of HG Acharya Ratan Prabhu. Devotees were planning to present one drama in the evening. I was asked to be part of one such drama. I got the role of a narrator. Devotees nicely performed drama; everyone liked it. We then took dinner prasadam at Gada kitchen and returned to our respective rooms.  We were staying in Ishodyan Bhavan in Mayapur.

By the time I reached my room it was 10 pm. The entire day was completely packed, I did not get time to complete my 16 rounds of chanting. Few rounds were remaining which I completed.

Also, it was important to take rest early because we did not want to miss the morning Mangala Arati in the Iskcon temple which starts at 4:30 am.

Many new devotees had come with us, and everyone wanted to attend morning Mangala arati. One of them was my colleague. He was also too eager to attend Mangala Arati in the morning. I was eager too.

Before going to bed, I prayed to Sri Sri Radha Madhav and Panca Tattva to bless me so that I can give up lethargy in the morning and go to temple to attend Mangala Arati.

A Krishna conscious day in Mayapur

The first day stay in Mayapur was memorable, we relished each and every moment. Entire day we remained engaged in Krishna Conscious activities. This is the beauty of visiting a holy place.

Even though we may not be pure devotees but seeing so many sincere devotees around us, we too get inspired to become serious in our spiritual life. We try to forget all our material worries and try our best to remain absorbed in Krishna.

When it became difficult to call Krishna’s name

Chanting the Hare Krishna maha – mantra isn’t a mundane activity but is in fact a means by which we can experience exponential spiritual pleasure.

Chanting connects us to Krishna provided we chant with utmost sincerity and seriousness. One of the most important requirements of chanting is that we should pronounce each syllable of the maha – mantra clearly and loud enough so that we can hear what we chant.
But many a times we the spiritual seekers chant inattentively without bothering if we are calling the names of Krishna with clarity or not. That the ability to chant Krishna’s name is a gift given to us by Krishna to re-establish our relationship with him is totally forgotten.
Have we ever bothered to ponder what if this gift, the gift of speech, is taken away from us one day? 
Recently I underwent oral surgery and realized what it means not having the ability to speak.
The surgery which lasted for more than 2 hours was quite complicated and very painful. After surgery my mouth and gums were swollen and it was almost impossible for me to open my mouth and speak. Now as per the vow taken during initiation we are supposed to chant 16 rounds of Hare Krishna maha-mantra daily irrespective of any circumstances and so I tried to comply with the vow.
But chanting became a herculean task. With great difficulty I was able to pronounce each syllable of the maha – mantra and in spite of the efforts I was not able to utter the holy names with clarity. And the chanting was so feeble that I had to struggle to hear what I was chanting. Somehow I was able to complete my 16 rounds. But the excruciating pain during chanting forced me to remember those days when I had the ability and opportunity to chant with clarity but I rarely bothered to do so. During those days my mouth just uttered the words, the ear remained oblivious to those words and my mind mostly wandered recklessly taking me into different worlds. I rarely chanted with love and devotion, rarely thinking that the ability to chant Krishna’s name is also a gift given to me by Krishna. And never ever thought what if this precious gift is taken away from me one day. Although Krishna being so kind has not taken this precious gift from me. But the temporary ailment at least made me realize that how casual I have been in my chanting.
Inattentive chanting is the root cause why we do not excel in our spiritual journey. Most of us make multiple material plans but seldom make plans to grow in our spiritual life. We do not realize that our ephemeral body is deteriorating day by day. When we are hale and hearty then we have more opportunity to be Krishna conscious. But sadly we waste those moments pursuing sensual goals. But if we utilize such precious moments in practicing spirituality then result will be phenomenal, we can attain Krishna.
So next time when we have beads in our hands and we are ready to invest time in chanting Hare Krishna maha – mantra then we should invest all our consciousness in it and chant clearly, attentively and reverentially and enjoy the transcendental sound and feel Krishna’s presence in our heart. Hope when I recover fully then I too will become more serious in my spiritual journey.

Bullets bleed Books heal

Antoine Leiris not just lost his young wife in the recent Paris carnage but his 17 month old son also lost his mother. Addressing her killers he wrote an open letter, “I don’t know who you are and I don’t want to know, you are dead souls. If this God for whom you kill blindly made us in his image, every bullet in the body of my wife is a wound in his heart.” He further wrote, “So no, I will not give you the satisfaction of hating you. You want it, but to respond to hatred with anger would be to give in to the same ignorance that made you what you are.”
In this hate filled atmosphere when hordes of lumpen terrorists are gleefully killing people hearing the message of peace and tolerance especially from someone who has been a victim of the mayhem is although surprising but is so pleasing.
True, humanity cannot be led seize by the acts of barbaric people, their mission of spreading hate and violence cannot be countered by more hatred and more violence. But nevertheless they need to be nabbed and neutralized and all the government of the world are working in that direction.
But the world has now become an unsafe place for all. The thirsty bullets of the terrorists vying for blood of innocents have filled our life with fear.  Today we can be killed anywhere – in restaurants, in theatre, in parks, in planes, in trains, on road, in offices and also in our homes.
The question which begs an answer is why so much violence in the world? Why one man rejoices killing another man?  Will the situation improve or will further deteriorate?
Humans start behaving savagely when their animalistic propensity overshadows his human emotions. This happens when the feeling of compassion and love gets buried under the debris of hate and ignorance. Vedic literature addresses this gruesome reality comprehensively and presents a roadmap which if followed with due diligence can create a world which will not be blemished with blood and fear.  Srimad Bhagavatam (SB) 12.2.1 says that in the age of Kaliyuga, the age in which we currently live, religion declines and so do mercy.  And we see today that authentic religious principles as given in the bona fide religious literature are being sacrificed at the altar of secularism and modernity. This has resulted in the rise of killer brigade who cunningly use religion as a tool for selfish purposes. They choose vulnerable youths as recruits who could be easily brain washed and made to believe that killing people will please his God.  There activities bring disrepute to God and his genuine followers.
This is a tough time for the devotees of the Lord because they have to simultaneously fight at two fronts. At one extreme are the atheists who want to deny the existence of God and at the other extreme are the terrorists & the hate brigade who claim to be the spokespersons of the God.
In such a hostile environment the torchbearers of religious principles should rise from their slumber to defeat the nefarious motives of the enemies of humanity. And the weapon to be used is the ‘wisdom words’ of sacred books such as Vedic literatures. As each ray of the sun easily swallows the darkness similarly each message contained in these books has the potential to ignite the mind and devour the ignorance.
History attests to this fact that whenever civilization passes through tough times the spiritually intelligent people take initiative to salvage the humanity. The representative of God always works for the welfare of mankind and continuously guides them towards righteousness. As Kaliyuga entered, vice began to overshadow virtue, alarmed at this outcome the sages assembled in Naimisaraṇya to discuss how to save people from the negative influence of this age. To achieve this they all decided that they should discuss elaborately about the transcendental message of the Supreme Lord, his different incarnations, his various pastimes and how the common man can get ultimate benefit by understanding his relationships with the benevolent Lord.  Speaking and hearing about the Lord is the most potent medicine because the words laced with transcendental message purifies a human heart checking all his sinful tendencies and simultaneously inspiring him to lead a virtuous life. 
Great personalities have revolutionized people’s life by instilling in their heart the love of God. For example Srila Prabhupada used to just chant the names of the Lord and speak the words of God from the sacred Vedas. He did not have money power or political power or muscle power but had pure spiritual power which was sufficient enough to change people’s heart and mind.  And to the surprise of the whole world his students easily took to devotional life and gave up all bad habits including eating meat because they understood that as a human if we inflict injury on other children of God then the act would displease God.
Today when the brutal bullets of the miscreants are causing tremendous pain and anxiety to all, the soothing message of these sacred books can only heal the bleeding heart.  These holy books spread love and bring lots of hope; it can change the world by changing people’s heart by transforming greed into generosity, anger into compassion and hate into love. So without any discrimination and delay we should share the words of God in each and every corner of the world. Srimad Bhagavatam confirms that once a man’s mind is enlivened by the knowledge of Personality of Godhead the knot in the heart is pierced and all misgivings are cut to pieces (Srimad Bhagavatam 1.2.20 & 1.2.21).

Srila Prabhupada – My supreme well – wisher

Dear Srila Prabhupada,

Please accept my humble obeisances at your lotus feet. All glories to your divine self.

 
The entire world was eulogizing, glorifying and worshipping Hiranyakasipu out of fear. But a small little boy of just five year, Prahlad, refused to accept Hiranyakasipu as God which shocked, shamed and ultimately finished Hiranyakasipu.

Indians were enamored by the western way of living and had almost forgotten their culture. Not just this they were actively participating in demeaning their tradition and most importantly portraying Vedic literatures as the work of some lesser mortals. During these difficult times you Srila Prabhupada, just like fearless Prahlad, fearlessly challenged the might of the western educated (and influenced) intelligentsia with your supreme intellectual prowess. Your cogent and deep explanation of Vedic literatures and history removed the veil of ignorance and many started accepting and appreciating the meaningful messages of the wisdom literatures.

Srila Prabhupada, you travelled to the entire world to teach people to lead a God conscious life. Your teachings were completely based on the timeless teachings of Vedic literatures.  Many saffron robe wearing scholars had also previously gone to the west but there they did not speak the Vedic philosophy in toto. They in fact began to adjust (distort) the message of the wisdom literatures to come in good books of the western (and converted Indians) educated class.  But you never compromised with the philosophy and so wrote the book “Bhagavad Gita As It Is”. Here “as it is” means that Krishna’s message is being delivered to the people in an unadulterated form. Your book “Bhagavad Gita As It Is” is today’s world’s largest circulating Gita. It was because of your uncompromising integrity and deep faith in the words of Krishna that in a short span of time you were able to transform the lives of millions of people. In fact many of them did not even know who Krishna “is” and what were his messages. But your genuine compassion convinced them that you are their honest well-wisher who had come to help them to lead a meaningful life.

Through your teachings you weren’t merely theorizing but were practically demonstrating how to lead a God (Krishna) centric life. Most people have got this idea that spirituality means keeping the picture of a god or gods in a cupboard or hanging them from a wall, lighting an incense stick and reciting some mantras. After this they completely forget God for entire day.

But you taught us:

·         There is only one God and not many gods.

·         Krishna or his plenary expansions like Lord Rama, Lord Chaitanya should be only worshipped as the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

·         Whatever activities we do, even whatever we eat should be done as an offering to the Lord.

·        All our dealings and livings should be as per the teachings of books like Bhagavad Gita, Srimad Bhagavatam etc.

It is because of you that today we know how to celebrate festivals. I have seen that for most people celebrating festivals like Janmashtami or Ramnavmi means performing some rituals in the morning and in the evening and throughout the day they just watch television or movies or spend time in idle gossips. You taught us how to be engaged 24 hours in a day in remembering Krishna and being engaged in serving him.  You made things so crystal clear that even a neophyte (like me) can engage himself in devotional life completely. You made devotional life a joyful experience. Now Krishna and all his devotees have become a part and parcel of our life.

That the purpose of human form of life is to return back to the spiritual world would have remained unknown to us if you would have not revealed it. You not just told us about the kingdom of God but also explained in detail about that spiritual abode which inspires us to go there. When you were about to finish your earthly duties then devotees asked you if you have any wish. Then your prompt reply was Kuch iccha nahi (Do not have any desire). This is the quality which each one of us should be aspiring in our life – eschewing all material desires so that we become eligible to return to the spiritual world.

Kolkata is a special place for all Iskcon members because it is your birth place. The first Iskcon temple in India was established in Kolkata by you. When someone asked you how Krishna looks like then you said that go and see Sri Sri Radha Govindaji at 3C Albert Road Kolkata. That is how Krishna looks. I consider myself to be very fortunate to be connected to such a wonderful temple.  You have been guiding me through your hundreds of books and lectures. You have helped me to understand the true meaning and purpose of my life. My humble request at your transcendental lotus feet is to bless me so that I can follow you as it is and become an instrument in spreading the wonderful message of Krishna to all.  Along with this please purify my consciousness and strengthen my determination so that I can chant sixteen rounds of Hare Krishna Mahamantra daily with all seriousness and follow the four regulative principles of – no meat eating, no gambling, no intoxication and no illicit sex.   My earnest prayer to you is to shower your choicest blessings upon me so that I can continue practicing devotion throughout my life. I like writing and want to serve you by writing Krishna conscious articles. If you think that this service is suitable for me then please give me sufficient intelligence and enthusiasm to regularly write quality Krishna conscious articles which can inspire people to take shelter of Krishna’s lotus feet.

Jhulan Yatra

Jhulan Yatra or the swing festival is being celebrated with great enthusiasm.  Replica of the forest groves of Vrindavan has been created within the temple. The swing and the arena where the festival is being celebrated have been beautifully decorated with colourful flowers and leaves. A magnificent swing bedecked with jewels is hung from the branches of trees with ropes. In such a splendid atmosphere Krishna and Radharani blissfully swings.

The sight of Krishna and Radharani swinging gives great joy to the devotees.  Devotees swing the Lord of their heart with great pleasure and throughout the festival they blissfully dance and joyfully sing the Hare Krishna Mahamantra, Jaya Radhe Jaya Krishna Jaya Vrindavan, Jaya Radhe, Jaya Jaya Madhava dayite and other devotional songs for the pleasure of the divine couple. 

Jhulan Yatra or the swing festival goes on eternally in the spiritual world.  The Jhulan Yatra pastime occurred in the forest groves of Vrindavan. Even the residents of the heavenly planets like Siddhas, Vidyadharas, Caranas, Kinnaras arrived on their celestial planes joyfully playing their musical instruments to witness the beautiful event. This wonderful pastime of the Lord with his consort Radharani and the Gopis of Vrindavan brought great joy to everyone.  This pastime is still celebrated in Vrindavan and in several other parts of the world by the devotees of Krishna.

In “Ananda Vrindavana Champu”, Kavi Karnapura explains: “The swing festival is the perfect object of meditation for those desiring a taste of devotion”. Devotees very eagerly wait for this festival; when the festival commemorates they make a magnificent jhulan (swing) for Krishna and Radharani.

This year the festival will be celebrated from 17th Aug to 21st Aug.

11 Krishna Conscious Capsules

  • Lord Krishna showed his universal form to his dear devotee friend Arjuna.
  • No one before Arjuna had ever seen this universal form.
  • It was because of Arjuna that other devotes of the Lord in the disciple succession were fortunate to see the Lord’s universal form.
  • Lord Krishna manifested his universal form by his internal potency.
  • Lord’s internal potency is inconceivable by human brain.
  • Lord Krishna says to Arjuna that his universal form cannot be seen simply by studying Vedas or by performing pious activities or by sacrifices or by performing penances.
  • To see the Lord’s universal form one has to be a pure & unalloyed devotee of the Lord.
  • The supreme Personality of the Lord showed his universal form to Arjuna to clear his doubt.
  • At the battlefield of Kurushetra Arjuna did not want to fight because the Kauravas were his relatives.
  • But Lord showed to Arjuna that those people with whom he is going to fight are already killed because of their impious acts.  Arjuna was just a doer.

Education – of No Use

Exasperated with the quantity & quantum of scams today people are desperate to find a solution which will put an end to it. Government changes, politicians’ changes, political parties’ agenda changes but still the end result is the same.

It is said that knowledge has the power to bring revolution, it can usher us in an era of peace, prosperity and happiness. Education changes a person’s life forever. It is said that knowledge is power and with this power one can conquer the entire world.

If education is considered to be the only instrument which dispels darkness, brings meaning to a person’s life, makes him a responsible citizen, makes him understand what is right & what is wrong, teaches him his duty towards the nation, towards the society and towards his fellow beings then why is that almost all (no exceptions) who had been & have been caught in the scams are highly educated people.

All those who are implicated are well known industrialist, media tycoons, high profile government officials and off course our very dear lovable politicians.

Education provides enlightenment. If it is so then why everyone caught in the scams are only highly educated people? I did not find even a single person who is neck deep in corruption as someone who was illiterate & had not had any basic education. If education is considered to bring enlightenment then why do these scamsters are still not enlightened? If education is considered to make them more civic and more responsible then why did it not happen? If education is considered to make people responsible then why did it not happen?

Our current education system is lacking something.

Today corruption is deep rooted in our society. Be it a traffic havaldar, a peon, a clerk, a teacher, a government official, a lawyer, a businessman, a journalist, politician, judges , men or women in fact almost everyone is involved in it. In nutshell whoever gets an opportunity they encash it.

If education has not been successful in bringing the desired result then is it not the time for us to introspect & find the root cause for its failure?

The present education system is just loading the students with plethora of information. It is not emphasizing in uplifting the conscience of the people, the hearts and the minds of the beings are not being transformed in schools and colleges. Instead they are thought that material possession is the most important thing for a person.

In pursuit of modernity we are shunning spirituality. We are spiritual beings not a bag of chemicals. Real education is that which nourishes the soul, which cleanses our conscience so that we can understand the real and the absolute truth. Once our conscience is purified we would understand the world in its true color, we would realize the meaning of real happiness, we would understand the real purpose of a human life, we would understand that all living beings are our own brothers and sisters, we would understand that real happiness is in selfless love, is in giving not in taking.

Bhagavad – gita clearly states that those in the modes of ignorance are bound to act in such a way which is harmful for the society. It says that a person should endeavour to come to the mode of goodness, once situated in the mode of goodness a person will work for the betterment of the society.

ayuktah prakrtah stabdhah satho naiskrtiko lasah

visadi dirgha – sutri ca karta tamasa ucyate (BG:18.28)

The worker who is always engaged in work against the injunctions of the scripture, who is materialistic, obstinate, cheating and expert in insulting others, and who is lazy, always morose and procrastinating is said to be a worker in the mode of ignorance. (By Srila Prabhupada).

Krishna clearly articulates that person in the mode of ignorance will commit such heinous crimes. Unless there is transformation from the modes of ignorance to modes of goodness there is no chance that the person will do any good to the society.

tatra sattvam nirmalatvat prakasakam anamayam

sukha – sangena badhnati jnana – sangena canagha (BG 14.6)

O sinless one, the mode of goodness, being purer than the others, is illuminating, and it frees one from all sinful reactions. Those situated in that mode become conditioned by a sense of happiness and knowledge. (By Srila Prabhupada).

So, if we are really serious about transforming the society then at first we need to transform the education system. Our education system should not shun spirituality but should embrace it. The purpose of education system should not be to just provide information but it should also transform pupils’ heart & cleanse their conscience. Schools & colleges should not be just a temple of education for namesake but in true sense it should bring a person closer to Lord which will ensure that the person is situated in the mode of goodness.
